The Weekly Review: 08/07/2012

A weekly round-up of what I have been watching, listening to and discussing. Rather than just posts about film, this is a bit more all-encompassing as I think my interest in cinema and art crosses over and between a variety of sources...

I watched very few films last week. But this week, I watched a bunch. It was also my birthday yesterday so I recieved great gifts including The Artist, Hugo and Le-Donk and Scor-Zay-Zee. They will be watched I hope, within the week. We shall see...

Highlight of the Week

Andy Murray: I'll be brief. I didn't think he would do this. In fact, when he was playing Baghdatis, I dind't think he'd beat him. But I am completely wrong. I hope he goes all the way. As I understand, he won the first set in the final (which is on as I write this) - the first time he has ever won a set in a Grand Slam Final. "C'mon Murray!"

DVD's/Blu-Rays/Cinema

Kes: For the Classic Columb, and now it puts me in a position to watch more Ken Loach. Good times.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Fincher's film.I'd never seen it before and yeah, it's fine. I think a thriller story can only do so much and, as I have watched the Swedish version, the story is the same anyway. Yes its better but just because its more stylish due to a huge budget.

The Great Train Robbery: Never knew this was available on YouTube. Indeed, there are many, many films, available free on YouTube. Check out my 1001 Page to see how many are available.

The Amazing Spider-Man: Its not brilliant, because we have seen it before, but it has set up the potential for a better franchise and, now they have jumped this hurdle, I reckon the next film will be better than all of Raimi's.

The Fox and the Hound: A new Disney Blu-Ray which looks incredible, again, in Hi-Def. And, I think the only purpose for 'Vixy', the love-interest for Todd, is to establish that the animals are not gay.

The Artist: A present from Sarah. Still a brilliant film which I wish I could show the kids at my school. Having said that, there is 20min chunk which drags a little. As soon as Peppy is famous it loses a bit of pace. But definately deserving of Best Picture.

Music/Podcasts

Shame Soundtrack: I blame Stevee from Cinematic Paradox for this. She had it on her page as a great soundtrack and, after a listen, I bought two tracks from the album. It is a fantastic score.

Hannibal Soundtrack: Still brilliant.

The Hollywood Gauntlet: Well, I have finished listening and they are both great listens. I need to watch more films from 1982 and I loved the comparison and discussion of both The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo films, with further scope about the book itself. A good start ... what's next?

Demented Podcast: I always enjoy Steve Honeywell (from 1001plus) on the LAMBcast so I downloaded a couple of episodes of the podcast and listened to an episode discussing my favourite film of 2011, The Skin I Live In and Cronenbergs Dead Ringers (a film I watched for a podcast with Ryan McNeil last year). I shall ensure I write a more detailed, spoiler-filled comment on the relevant website, but their discussion of The Skin I Lived In missed out great discussion about gender and sexuality. What defines masculinity? what defines femininity? What about if you are transgender? What would you do if you were? Should you kill yourself over such a "horror"? These are what I believe the film is about - and it is what makes the film so brilliant!

TV/Theatre/Art Galleries/Books/Misc

I won't mention The Simpsons again. But Sarah recieved a gift of the two series of Sherlock so I believe that will be viewed very soon. Suffice to say, the TV has been filled with tennis this week.

The Weekly Review: 24/06/2012

A weekly round-up of what I have been watching, listening to and discussing. Rather than just posts about film, this is a bit more all-encompassing as I think my interest in cinema and art crosses over and between a variety of sources...

Very few films this week. I have been completely immersed in The Simpsons. Blame a boxset I have not watched yet. Blame a fantastic Season 8. Blame whatever you like, but film ultimately took a back seat.

Highlight of the Week

The Lammys: It really has kicked off this week. I love this time of year and I'm excited about the future of The LAMB. We've yet to hear from the LAMB who is Best Blog, but I think it has been a fascinating year with some great outcomes. For me personally, what I'm going to do, is go through my Google Reader and stop following a huge bunch of blogs because I have realised I am losing track. I have followed too many and therefore don't use it as effectively. I don't visit some sites that I 'joined' years ago whilst there are many blogs out there which I don't visit often enough (or realised I don't even follow) - and clearly should. Specifically, I hope to become much more active on French Toast Sunday, Cinema Sights and Fog's Movie Reviews. These are site which, though I knew about, for some reason or another I haven't given enough time too. But this will change now. I'm also spending [possibly too much] time on the LAMB forums, which is alot of fun. If you are a LAMB, get in on that: http://thelambforums.proboards.com/index.cgi

DVD's/Blu-Rays/Cinema

Warrior: Yeah, it was alright. But I felt the entire film was like a tick-list. Imagine the boardroom meeting: "How can we have twice as many fights as a normal boxing movie?"/"I know, lets show two characters with their own separate stories in a martial-arts-type-boxing tournament". Two more characters in the story and the film would simply show every match in the tournament!

The Bourne Identity: I will re-release my negative overview of this film. I stand by the film being weaker than the sequels, but I think I "get" why people like it now.

The Bourne Supremacy: The strongest story in the franchise. So far.

The Bourne Ultimatum: The best action-sequences in the franchise. Bring on Jeremey Renner...

All Quiet on the Western Front: For the 'Classic Columb'...

Music/Podcasts

The LAMBcast: Listened to the whole Brian VS The World episode and it was great. I'm not a big fan of Scott Pilgrim VS The World. I get why people like it, but there is something a little smug about the whole film. I'm a little bit more convinced about how bad a film it is ... and I thank Brian for his insight to this. I also think the seven opponents he had were completely beat!

The Fugees: Listened to 'The Score' and damn, it is so good. Something so personal and yet passionate about the songs and lyrics. Brilliant music.

TV/Theatre/Art Galleries/Books/Misc

The Simpsons - As mentioned, halfway through the eighth season and I am keen to keep watching. Also began tweeting an animator on the show. What an amazing job! As mentioned on Twitter/Facebook - Space Coyote is a badass.

Across the Blogosphere ...

I haven't had an 'Across the Blogosphere' in some time, so I thought, now I have a few blogs and podcasts to mention, now would be the time.

First up, and arrogantly so, I featured on the LAMBcast for the first time. Its always difficult for us Brit folks to manage to take part in these things - often the ideal time is in the afternoon on a Saturday and - if thats the time people start across the atlantic - us Brit folks are at that moment in the middle of our Saturday night festivities. Thanks to Nick and Jason for beginning a little earlier so I could take part! I thoroughly enjoyed the show and I hope to take part again in the future.

Secondly, as most people know already, Mad Hatter managed to snag a sweet interview with an Oscar-Winning editor - no other than Walter Murch, who edited the sound on Apocalypse Now! amongst a huge bunch of Francis Ford Coppola films. Do have a listen!

Thirdly, Univarn found his favourite faux-movie trailers. You can find a bunch on YouTube, but some of these you might have missed ... I know I had.

One more? Sure - this site I have only recently found and it is incredible. The 1001 Movies club has not ceased it continues in the form of filmsquish! so check it out! It shall not be long before my review on Melies A TRIP TO THE MOON will be a part of the relaunch!

Remember - you can always email The Simon and Jo Film Show directly using this email: simonandjoshow@gmail.com
We are also on Twitter (simonandjoshow) and Facebook.

Across The Blogosphere...

As part of the FILM BLOGS group, I was asked to put out their Monthly Film Blogs round-up - which, effectively doubles-up for my Across the Blogosphere. They are a few from last week, but their are also loads more than I normally do! Because there is alot of writing...

"Hello Blog Writers and Blog Readers,

This is Simon writing here from 'The Simon and Jo Film Show' (oh, now that you ask, its a podcast that covers film on a weekly basis - much fun can be had! ITs on itunes and my personal blog is www.screeninsight.com - do check it out!) and I've been asked to put together an email of links to check out for all you film bloggers!

The blogging community is a funny one, it seems many blog-readers are actually blog-writers. Obviously, many people will find your special post via Google searches and recommendations from other sites - if IMDB recommend your review perhaps? But, in the first instance blog-readers being blog-writers is a great starting point because, if the blog-writer who reads your blog likes your blog enough, they will write about reading your blog and the beautiful circle of [blogging] life continues.

Fact is, commenting to simply show your appreciation is what everyone seeks - do you like their article? do you agree? is a fact incorrect? (Once I claimed Fellini was an Italian Neo-Realist! Ouch, thank you to Mike Lippert on You Talkin' To Me? blog for correcting a small mistake!). So, put some time aside, go through the links below and click, read and comment - I guarantee, you'll come off better for it and, if you are wise enough to leave a link to your own blog at the bottom, I further guarantee that those writers will have a gander at your blog too...

BLOG ROUND UP

If you dig your Alfred Hitchcock it is imperative that you go to Alred Hitchcock Geeks Blog. He covers many, many incredible aspects of Hitchcocks career - aspects that are not covered on the Special Edition DVD. How Cezanne features in 'The Wrong Man', the politics of 'Foreign Correspondant'... seek it out at: http://www.alfredhitchcockgeek.com/

Flickering Myth is a blog run by many different members - therefore covering a wide range of topics and issues. Recently, I read all my latest information on Comic-Con in San Diego on their site - and they handily provide the links to find out what the trailers and reveals were. Find them at: http://flickeringmyth.blogspot.com/

Rachel at Rachels Reel Reviews is a great blog as, for one, she has a daily change of events - from the 'Saturday Soapbox' through to the 'Thursdays Three' and 'Fridays New Feature Films'. She also has a podcast - Reel Insight - released on a weekly basis. Then, ON TOP of this she does additional bits and bobs. Find her at: www.rachelsreelreviews.com

The Audient rips apart Tarsem Singh's 'The Cell' starring Vince Vaughn , J-Lo and Vincent D'Onofrio. Personally, I love how, back in the day, Vince Vaughan starred in 'The Cell', 'Jurassic Park: The Lost World' and 'Psycho '98'. Whoever told him to go down the comedy route should be paid alot of money. Find this specific post by typing: http://theaudient.blogspot.com/2010/07/new-discoveries.html

The Intermittent Sprocket claims himself that he is "a projectionist and a waster. Which makes every thought that pops into my head important enough to spit up on the internet.". Though I wouldn't knock him down so much, he does have a great understanding of the films and the marketing - recently he wrote about tag lines" Check him out on: http://theintermittentsprocket.blogspot.com/

Julian Stark over at Movies And Other Things writes some great posts but, what is even more interesting, is that throughout the year he is predicting the Oscar Contenders... oh? who is going to be up for Best Picture 2011? No ideas? He has it all planned out: http://julianstark-moviesandotherthings.blogspot.com/

THE BLOG OF THE MONTH

I have only just found this: http://www.unknownscreenwriter.com/

Seems to be not only a blog which covers a range of cienmatic issues, but also a place whereby the informatyion is stored and available. Separate sections focussing solely on 'Structure' and 'Character' provide a wealth of reading material for budding screenwriters.

Again, http://www.unknownscreenwriter.com/

If you are hunting down more blogs to read, have a gander at the LAMB (The Large Association of Movie Blogs) whereby, regularly, they release LAMB Chops or Bloody Chops or Classic Chops - respectively looking at simply great posts, great posts amongst the horror-film bloggers out there and posts about classic cinema, pre-1979.

The LAMB can be found at: http://largeassmovieblogs.blogspot.com/

Do check them out! and comment if you support them!
