Steady Increase

Just a quick post ...

A really great example of the support I have received over the last year. Crucially, the far right-side is the hit from yesterday.

I'm not about quick-hits for downloading screen-shots, I'm all about analysis and conversation and the decent page-view times has added to this fact

Thank you to my readers and, to all my new readers, remember there is much more analysis on many, many more films on the left-side bars so please have a look around!

Preparing for a New Year and a New Start!

Changes must be made.

Over the last couple of months, I have lost followers. An all-time high of 91, I was excited that I was heading towards 100! But alas, it changed direction and now sits, sadly, at 88.

But then, on the other side, my traffic has increased! This whole blogging thing is a tricky business it seems ...

So I ask you! What can I do to improve?

Is the layout any good? Do you want more lists? Are the posts simply too long?

In terms of my writing - does it ramble on too much? maybe, as fellow bloggers, you may see rookie-mistakes in my writing - Do tell me how I can improve on these!

For me, I hope that this becomes more of a library to dip into (Access to different theories and interpretations of films, franchises and constructs of cinema) rather than a news-feed.
Is this realistic? Does anyone actually look at the older analysis and reviews using the side bars?

The A-Z posts?
The Franchise Posts - Rocky, Star Wars and Saw...?

I think the big question is What do you like?

What brings you to this blog in the first place?

Please comment below or email me directly! Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

A Present for my Blog Readers

Well, I have been on holiday for about a week and have only just returned. But I couldn't go to Cannes and forget about all my fellow film-obsessed blog readers could I?

'Screen Insight' Statistics (July)

Inevitably, due to the Summer break, posts have gone up this past month. Sad to say that, due to many plans dotted throughout August, I doubt I will be able to keep it up. Those folks who manage 2 or 3 posts a day (I'm talking to you Hatter...) I have no idea how you do it. Then again, I know that most people finish at 5.30 and that I, generally, sure as hell do not. C'est la vie.

We are up to 24 posts in the month of July, up from 20 in June (and 17 in May). I intend to have posts running while I am away at different points during August so, it is possible I can keep up to at least 24. Time will tell.

The last month saw a high of 1,044 hits. This is a huge increase from the previous months 760, but it is a shame to notice that the amount of time spent on the site has dropped to a little shy above a minute at 1-minute 7-seconds (though it does say different stats on different pages on Google Analytics - I am just taking this as the most obvious as it appears on the first page.). I think back to Anomalous Materials great posts on using these figures and it does indeed worry me that the time is edging that much closer to the under-a-minute mark. Not good.
The bounce rate has remained quite steady, with a 76.15% bounce (4% rise from the 72% last month). Some posts - such as the 'Time for a Hangover' post - are clearly people dropping on it following some random entry on Google, but I am seeing a little more interest in the older posts so the scroll bars seem to be doing their job. The Classic Columb (at Man, I Love Films) does seem to be garnering a few more hits too - with those posts becoming a little bit more successful than others.

Top 10 Blog Posts

Interesting surge in popularity of the Kidulthood post and, with the hit of the X-Men:First Class soundtrack, I am keen to continue that series. Those Top 5's remain quite popular - with the Pixar one making a new entry nice and high. I have a few up my sleeve for the coming weeks so I fear that the whole Top 10 will be made up of Top 5's in due course... eek.

'Screen Insight' Statistics (June)

Though a little bit late, I will still endevaour to involve you on the statistics. The last month, again, has been incredibly busy. Now I have my Classic Columb at Man I Love Films and The Film Locker podcast continuing throughout the month, I have been struggling to update with deep and meaningful posts. Despite the Top 5 Posts remaining the most popular, they also take a while to put together so I have not written any during June. Though I have released 20 posts this month - a little better than the 17 the month prior. The whole point of these statistics should be ensuring that I look at the stats and use the data to inform what posts to release - but alas, though I have learnt that Top 5's are great at driving traffic ... I am stupid enough not to write them. Anyway, lets reflect on June because, I'd like to think, with holidays coming up soon, I can really invest in my posts soon that will utilise what I have learnt with these statistics.

The visits has risen a teeny-weeny bit to 760 visits, but the bounce rate has risen to 72%. I think I need to aim for a 50% bounce rate - so that I know at least half the visitors are actually reading my site, because so far roughly 70% are gone pretty quick. I have often used Google Reader to check out sites and I have no idea whether they are counted - I shall look into something to count who is reading my RSS feed because, although I know the subscribers, I don't know how often they are actually reading...

Finally, the average time on the site is rising by a couple of seconds - now 1-minute 38. It needs to be more! I have purchased a bunch of soundtracks so I think, if I write a few more of those posts, that may assist. I really enjoy the Incredible Soundtrack series because, as I listen to them, its nice to put mt feelings towards the soundtracks into a post.

Top 10 Blog Posts

I am beginning to lose track on this if I am honest. First off, when I work this Top 10 out, I have to take out two 'pages' - namely, the main page which you fall upon as soon as you type the URL in - because it always comes out on top, and secondly, a search function which often comes in at about 3 or 4 every month. Its also a month-by-month account, so not hits 'of all time' - or more importantly, since the site changed URL in March. But, I tried to find the Top 5 Best Picture winners to see how much it climbed and I couldn't find it - it couldn't have gone from nothing to something substantial in such a short time - could it? On the plus side, the James Bond analysis I have completed are clearly getting their hits - the From Russia with Love post was only released a week ago so its good to see it gaining hits.

'Screen Insight' Statistics (May)

First, it is worth noting that this past month has seen a substantial drop in blog posts. I have published 17 new posts in May opposed to  a much more respectable 26 in April. Inevitably, this has factored in the visits tot he site as I have lost visitors in the past month. Last month I had a little over 700 and now it has dropped to only 678 visits. I've been exceptionally busy marking GCSE Art Coursework and Exam work whilst, the planning for a stag-do has taken up much of my spare time. Add to this the new Nephew that has been added to my family (requiring a visit to see family) and a gathering in Southhampton and we find that very little time can go towards blogging - and very little time towards film-watching...

Having said this, the average time on the site has risen to 1-minute 33-seconds, which is good to see. At the same time, the bounce-rate has decreased to 67%, again - a promising sign. The shortness of the A-Z posts do not require a long amount of time to read - and these were released alot this month because I had little time to type up huge essays and big Top 5 posts. I know already that June will have some big changes in blog posts and podcasts accessible on - and through - this blog ...

Top 10 Blog Posts
9. Across the Blogosphere... 02/05/2011 (NE)

It is interesting to note how the Top 5 posts seem to gain the most attention, whilst, the A-Z posts do not feature as specific pages people are visiting. I assume, if they are read, the are read on the main blog. It is a weak month overall - but I know that I only have myself to blame with the minimal posts published. I have a bunch of A-Z posts ready to release soon but some analysis of Classic Cinema need to be put together and, believe me, they will be released in due course ...

'Screen Insight' Statistics (April)

I wrote a Statistics post for last month. My new URL began on 5th March 2011 and, I am sharing with you what these statistics have revealed as I try and re-establish a readership and build a blog that is primarily informative and, for me, reflective on my interest in film. Having said that I wanted to 'share' with you my statistics, there were some glaring omissions from last months statistics. This I shall attempt to rectify this month by comparing this month to last months.

In March - noting the first 5 days amounted to nothing - garnered me 310 visits (182 Absolute Unique Visitors). During April, it has more than doubled with 726 visits (568 Absolute Unique Visitors) - 73% of which are new to the site. So this, I believe shows how, very slowly, the blog is becoming re-established successfully and that Google is beginning to pick-up on all the old posts as it used to.

The bounce rate in March was 62% Bounce Rate, which I believe is a good. As I understand, a 'bounce' is a click to your site which is clearly unintentional or unwanted - and this is clear by the milli-second, or single-second the connection to your site. Clearly, if someone 'browsed' your site for one-second, it hardly counts as a fan or your website. Unfortunately, in April, my bounce rate has risen to 75% so I need to be wary about my content and ensure that everything remains relevant.

The average-time-on-site in March was 2-minute 40-seconds. In the previous blog, as I recall, it was always a struggle to maintain an average of over a minute, so this seems exceptionally good. Not to mention how the A-Z series probably takes barely a minute to read. Again, unfortunately, as I gain more visitors to the site, it appears that they don't read as much as my April average-time-on-site has dropped tremendously to 1-minute 12-seconds. Now, on 7th April and 24th April, the average time on the site was 4-min 42 and 3-min 27 respectively so I think I will have a gander of these dates and what blog-posts were released at that time because, it appears, this is what people are more interested in

So, the April Top 10 Blog Post are as follows:
10. Across the Blogosphere... 24/04/2011 (NE)

I think that's a good round-up. Everything, bar two posts which released at the very start of April - or the end of March - all appear. Again, the Incredible Soundtracks come up the top, with a suprise in the Gerard Butler post - I think I shall ensure that the Favourite Film Faces posts are exclusively shots of film stars in roles before they were famous because that is a great way to establish an ongoing theme - opposed to a show of Jon Hamm in Mad Men looking good.

The Leonardo DiCaprio post, I have a feeling, will remain high for a while. Namely because it appears that the most poular key words that bring people to my site at the moment are "leonardo dicaprio films" and "best leonardo dicaprio movies" (followed in third place by "gerard butler"). These words will be around for a long time to come ...

To finish, I direct people to the search-bars on the left to see the wealth of material accessible still...

'Screen Insight' Statistics (March)

Taking a little idea started on fellow Lib-Dem Blogger Mark, I thought I'd give a run down on some statistics for this blog. Since the move from the previous blog url (http://www.knowingviews.blogspot.com/) there has been an inevitable drop it hits, but it is steadily building up again. More importantly the bounce rate is substantially lower and the average time on the site is much higher than on the previous site. So, although the move has lost a few hits, it has gained a more quality readership. Obviously, thanks to all the folks who have continued to support the blog since that change over.

The most popular posts in the last month are as follows:

10. Incredible Soundtracks #4: The Village
9. A-Z: #50 The Color Purple
8. Incredible Soundtracks #1: A Single Man
7. Incredible Soundtracks #3: The Million Dollar Hotel
6. Incredible Soundtracks #2: The Social Network
5. 'Clock' by Christian Marclay
4. A-Z: #48 Closer
3. Redline (Takeshia Koike, 2010)
2. Boardroom Meeting with Zack Snyder
1. Top 5 'U2' Tracks Used in Cinema/TV

It's worth noting that 2, 3 and 10 were only released in the last week so it is clear that the site is getting that little bit more popular lately as the new URL is coming up on search-sites.

Secondly, despite the lack of comments on a few of the 'Incredible Soundtracks' posts, they are ultimately getting the most hits - moreso than the multiple 'A-Z' posts which have been posted in the last month - only two of which manage to make the Top 10.

Finally, I have found that posts about art galleries often make an appearance high up on the list. This may be something to do with the lack of information on the internet. If you are looking for a review on a popular film, i'll be the last place someone will look at using Google, whilst I may be amongst the top 10 sites about a specific art gallery, showing a specific work of art by a specific artist. The last analysis of Art - at The Saatchi Gallery - not only got a huge bunch of hits, but additionally had an artist commenting on the post! Mental.

Remember to use the search-bars on the left as everything is easily accessible and the reviews are not bound by time, in that, rather than being reviews, they are more an analysis of the themes and ideas post-viewing.
