A-Z #42: Chicken Run

You can pick up hundreds of DVD's for a round-pound each - it doesn't matter. Its never about quantity, its about quality. A-Z is my way of going through my collection, from A-Z, and understanding why I own the films ... or you can tell me why I should sell 'em

#42 - Chicken Run

Why did I buy it?

This goes way back. Again, a huge bunch of films were purchased in the hey-day of DVD. Chicken Run was one of these films. I remember the exceptional sales it had around Christmas time and the huge British-Success which was Nick Parks animation studios going 'feature'-length. Unlike the various Wallace and Gromit shorts that preceded it.

Why do I still own it?

Because, if I'm honest, I don't think its bad enough to sell. I need a little bit of balance to my Disney-only family films - and this is one of them. Then again, I don't look at it and think "this is incredible" - in fairness, I think its a good film. I would have to replace it with another family-friendly film and the question is - which one? There is nothing as unique as claymation chickens and, with Mel Gibson, there is a nice Hollywood touch.

Can You Recommend the Family-friendly film I should have instead if Chicken Run?

  1. Corey went through a Chicken Run phase last year some time, which means I musta seen it about five times in a week, but then never again. He does that there are few that have the staying power to beat that week mark.

  2. I would be very interested in a post whereby you highlight which films passed the test and why - Corey should be your judge on what makes a good and what makes a bad film because, at that age, longevity is the key. I watch JURASSIC PARK for years and I still think its awesome.

  3. Well to be honest, most of my kids' film reviews are heavily influenced by Corey's reaction. Hence my enjoyment of Airbender.
Just to drop a couple in here; ones I can think of off the top of my head that really have staying power are the Toy Stories (2 in particular), The Wallace and Gromits - easy cos they're shorter, but as we often watch the whole box set in one, they end up longer than a feature, and Corpse Bride and Nightmare Before Christmas are stayers. Oh and Gremlins 2, he forgets about it every now and then but but regularly comes back to it if he's having a browse at the DVD shelf. I swear he has almost as many DVDs as me, and he's only 4 - only cos I love most of them too though.

  4. It's a fun film but not as good as the Wallace and Gromit shorts.

  5. THE LAST AIRBENDER was underrated - it just had some awful clunking dialogue. GREMLINS 2 is interesting because my younger brother and I used to love that film ourselves when we were younger - I think it is the bit whereby the film gets all mashed up and Hulk Hogan has to turn it back on which makes it incredibly unique.I'm looking forward to having kids but, before we get to Gremlins and Wallace and Gromit, the child and I will have watched ALL the Disney classics... thats a plan already in place for me.

  6. But we can forgive them - it was their first experience of doing a feature film. Question is, is it better than the wallace and gromit feature film?
